The canvases feature gilded crowns, inextinguishable subterranean fires, snowcapped mountains, and fisticuffs. If the subject matter in Carlson’s new work is mystifying, the artist says: “blame my addiction to podcasts.”

His muses include BBC World Global News, This American Life, The History of Rome, and Radio Lab. He doesn’t limit his inspiration to online white noise. In the show,

Carlson is stirred by masterpieces in art history, such as Rembrandt’s Supper at Emmaus to Jan van Eyck’s Ghent Altarpiece. He is as comfortable representing the human body as fantastical architecture.
